Why Moving Abroad Is More Than Just a Cost of Living Decision

Moving abroad often starts with one clear goal: to reduce expenses. For many, the idea of a lower cost of living is the main driver behind such a big life change. When I decided to move abroad, this was a key factor for me as well. Living in the U.S., my monthly expenses averaged around $5,000 as a single person. For families, this number can grow even larger. But my move turned out to be about much more than just saving money.
After careful prayer, planning, and research, I left the United States on July 25, 2025. My plan was straightforward: lower my living costs, travel, and explore real estate opportunities across borders. With over eight years of experience as a real estate professional, I expanded my business globally. I hold Associate Broker licenses in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and I serve clients as a global consultant. This move touched every part of my life. Traveling and living in different countries allowed me to explore international real estate markets while continuing to serve clients interested in global possibilities.
The Real Reasons Behind Moving Abroad
Cost of living is often the first thing people mention when considering a move abroad. But the decision involves many other factors that shape the experience and outcome.
Buying a one-way ticket with no return date was a leap into the unknown. It felt surreal to leave my home and life in the U.S. behind without a clear plan to return. This kind of freedom is rare and powerful. It opens doors to new experiences and perspectives that staying in one place cannot offer.
Personal Growth and Exploration
Living abroad pushes you out of your comfort zone. It challenges your assumptions and habits. You learn to adapt to new cultures, languages, and ways of life. This growth is often the most rewarding part of the journey.
For someone in real estate, moving abroad is also a chance to explore new markets firsthand. It allows for a deeper understanding of international property trends and client needs. This knowledge can improve the quality of service and open new business opportunities.
Experiencing Mexico Beyond Vacation
My first destination was Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Arriving on July 25, 2026, I immediately felt a sense of liberation. I had visited Mexico many times before, but this was different. Packing my life into two suitcases and not having a home to return to in the U.S. was a new experience.
Mexico offered more than just beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. The culture, the people, and especially the food made a lasting impression. As an American, I thought I knew what good tacos tasted like, but living there showed me how much more there was to discover. Taquerias has amazing tacos! Each order of tacos arrived on corn or flour tortillas, your choice, filled with perfectly sautéed shredded chicken and fresh mozzarella cheese that stretched with every bite. They were served alongside some of the most flavorful peppers I had ever tasted. I was used to American-style tacos with cheese, salsa, sour cream, and lettuce, but this was entirely different — a mouthwatering combination of flavors that felt authentic, simple, and deeply satisfying. It quickly became a meal I enjoyed at least twice a week.
